27th June 2009

Today was the opening of Turner Contemporary Open 2009 in Margate.
This is an exciting day for Margate, and indeed for Kent. With over 100 pieces of art showcasing 53 artists this was an involved and inspiring exhibition.

1st June 2009

I've just returned from Pulse. I must admit it was a smaller show that it has been for years, and I came away feeling that the best of the show was all about the new designers and group of new hopefulls in Lauchpad. This candle stick is by Nick Fraser.

I was also epecially drawn to Annette Bugansky's range of textured porcelain homewares including vases and bowls in a stitich design. SCP also had some stunning new pieces with designs by Alex Hellum and Donna Wilson to name a few.

I also ran into my friends at Anorak and it seems that they are going from stregnth to stregnth.

1st May 2009

Grand designs was hell. It was packed and hot and not as awe inspiring as I would have hoped. I did like the cross section of the eco home though. And the flat packed house worked for me. I really didn't need to see all the millions of dodgy bits of art or numerous bathroom taps (none of which looked better than what you may see at Ikea). A hot day out.

Barend Hemmes is the inventor of the Jaguar Motorbike which is taking the world by storm. Check out his website. These are stunning. He's also designed some pretty slick wooden light bulb light shades which are now available through Suck-uk. Watch this space. This guy will go far. http://m-cycles.com/

I must admit I have just returned from 6 weeks in Australia. What a fabulous place. But about 2 years behind in product design. Oh well, back to the grind.

4th December 2008

Just had a meeting with Anorak and love their range of sleeping bags and picnic rugs. Their quirky style is already taking their products to all the right places. It's great to see new ideas taking off. I look forward to seeing their extended range in 2009.

Hidden Art Cornwall

I've just come back from Falmouth University in Cornwall where I had been running some 1-1 sessions following by a presentation at Truro University. I was completely blown away by the level of talent of the Hidden Art members. I was particularly keen on the work of Hannah Maughan and Ismini Samanidou who's unique idea of lace glass was very inspiring.

I also met with Nick of Journeyman Furniture who's new techniques with furniture were interesting. I hope hope that they find the best channels for their work.

The presenation in the afternoon was fine, and I spent the journey back to London talking with Matt Dabbs from Lime Studio who's rise to success in the design world has been tremendous. Turns out he's a professional chef too!
